Starting a blog is one of the hardest but most rewarding things you may ever do, and if done right, it can also be crazy financially rewarding. Jon Morrow of smartblogger.com says there are a lot of idiot bloggers, but there are ways that you can make smart decisions and not be one of them. To you from me, smart decision #1 is to start a blog with Bluehost and WordPress.
Now, as a quick note, this step by step guide does contain affiliate links, so if you make a purchase, I do get a small commission. Not only am I so grateful for the support (really, thank you!), but it helps me pay for my own site costs, support my family, and keep offering all of this information for free.
Why use WordPress to start a blog with Bluehost?
Frankly, it is one of the most popular blogging platforms around because it’s easy to use and highly customizable. This allows you to take advantage of a highly effective platform and still stand out. But to start a blog you actually own and can monetize, you want a self-hosted WordPress.org blog. This means you pay for website hosting and a domain instead of (essentially) renting space from WordPress.com.
Now, let’s walk through how to start a blog with Bluehost.
Follow these easy steps, and your new blog will be up and running in minutes. Then I’ll teach you how to take that even further to make it beautiful, shareable, and earn you money.
Step 1: Get Started
Bluehost makes getting started a cinch. Start by going here and clicking on the Get Started button.
Remember, hosting with Bluehost comes with a FREE domain, 24/7 Support, and EASY WordPress installation. Win!
Step 2: Choose Your Pricing Plan
Next, choose your pricing plan. Though the monthly plan is tempting, I highly recommend choosing the yearly option! Because Bluehost’s pricing is so amazing, even this won’t cost you much.
There are two main reasons going with a yearly pricing plan is better:
- Save money! You get a way bigger discount by going for the yearly plan.
- Incentive! You’ve just invested in your blog for a year, so make that time and money count.
Step 3: Set Up Your Domain
Bluehost allows you to take advantage of the free domain that comes with your hosting purchase or use a domain you’ve already purchased elsewhere.
If you haven’t already purchased a domain, I’ve got a handy little checklist with things to consider before settling on one.
- Is your blog name short and punchy, aka memorable?
- Is the domain name for your blog available (Bluehost will check when you enter it in)?
- Are social media handles available for your blog name so that you’re consistent across all channels?
- Is your domain name something that’s easily misspelled?
- Is your blog and domain name something that can grow with you over time?
Step 4: Let Bluehost Help You Launch
Once you’ve entered your account and payment information, it’s time to create your WordPress site. Bluehost offers this as a 1-click install in your new dashboard, or click the Start Building button and their helpful wizard will take you step by step through the process from there.
While the wizard will take you through the theme options, I would recommend choosing a standard one to get your started and customizing it once you’re more familiar with how your new WordPress dashboard works.
I’ve also got some tips to help you create a more beautiful blog in the extra resource I promised below.
Step 5: Start Customizing Your WordPress Site
Your website even comes standard with a “Coming soon!” landing page so anyone who does stumble onto your website knows you’re working on something great. While that’s up, work on customizing your website’s look, features, and starter content. Hint: I’ve got a resource below to help with that!
When you’re ready to show the world your blog, click on the Launch button.
You did it!
You’ve successfully started your blog, and you’ve taken the first step toward becoming an amazing blogger. Now all you have to do is start customizing its appearance, add features via plugins, and monetize it.
